What Is F5-CSE Cloud?

TL;DR
  • F5-CSE Cloud is the F5 Certified Solution Expert, Cloud credential, awarded by passing Cloud Solutions exam 402.
  • Eligibility requires valid F5-CA BIG-IP, F5-CTS BIG-IP LTM and F5-CTS BIG-IP DNS certifications; one specialist credential is not enough.
  • Exam 402 has 70 questions (65 scored), 105 minutes, a 245 passing score on a 100-350 scale, and costs US$180.
  • F5 publishes five exam sections but no percentage weights, so do not trust sites quoting official domain percentages.

What F5-CSE Cloud Actually Is

F5-CSE Cloud stands for F5 Certified Solution Expert, Cloud. It is an F5 credential that validates a candidate's ability to design, migrate, deploy and automate F5-based application delivery in cloud environments. The credential is earned by passing a single exam, Cloud Solutions 402, which F5 delivers through Pearson VUE. In F5's learning portal the credential is styled F5-CSE, CLD.

The "Solution Expert" tier sits above the administrator and technology-specialist levels in F5's program. The exam is aimed at professionals who have direct cloud-infrastructure experience and the architecture and integration competence to connect application delivery services to cloud platforms, software-defined networks and automation tooling. F5 does not publish a mandatory degree, a fixed number of experience years or a required training-hour count. What it does publish is a hard prerequisite chain, covered below.

The exam blueprint, identified as 402.42019 and linked from F5's December 1, 2025 Cloud Solutions support page, is the authoritative scope document. It is five pages long and lists five examination sections. The exam is not designed around version-specific TMOS features, so a candidate who knows cloud architecture principles and how F5 products fit into them is better positioned than one who has memorized release-specific behavior.

Where to start: Before buying any study material, download the current blueprint from F5's Cloud Solutions 402 support page. Every other resource, including this article, is a commentary on that document. For a deeper walk through each section, see our F5-CSE Cloud Exam Domains guide.

What It Is Not: Clearing Up the Acronym

Search results for "F5-CSE Cloud" can be muddy, so it helps to be precise about scope. The credential described here is:

  • Not the F5 Security Solutions track (exam 401), which is a separate Solution Expert path.
  • Not the DNS exam 302, which is a technology-specialist prerequisite in the cloud route.
  • Not an F5 Distributed Cloud accreditation, which is a different product-focused program.
  • Not an AWS, Azure or Google Cloud certification, even though cloud platform concepts appear in its scope.

Third-party sites sometimes blur these lines, for example by claiming that any single technology-specialist credential qualifies you for 402, or by describing newer products that the blueprint never mentions. When a claim conflicts with F5's own pages, F5's pages win. For a short orientation on the name itself, see What Does F5-CSE Cloud Stand For?, and for the formal credential overview visit our F5-CSE Cloud Certification page.

The Prerequisite Chain

This is the part most often misreported. The current 402 support page explicitly requires all three of the following valid certifications:

  1. F5-CA BIG-IP (the administrator credential)
  2. F5-CTS BIG-IP LTM (Local Traffic Manager technology specialist)
  3. F5-CTS BIG-IP DNS (DNS technology specialist)

Holding just one technology-specialist credential is insufficient. F5's Cloud learning path shows the route as the five F5CAB administrator exams (or an eligible legacy administrator route), then LTM exams 301a and 301b, then DNS exam 302, and finally Cloud Solutions 402. Retained legacy entries do not reopen exam 101 to new candidates.

ItemEligibility requirementRecommended, not required

F5-CTS BIG-IP DNSValid certification requiredGSLB and DNS design exposure

Because prerequisite credentials must be valid, a lapsed prerequisite can block your eligibility. Plan the full chain, not just exam 402. Our F5-CSE Cloud Requirements guide provides a checklist format for tracking this.

Exam 402 Format and Logistics

These specifications come directly from page 4 of the current blueprint and F5's catalog pages, rechecked in October 2026:

DetailPublished specification
ExamCloud Solutions 402
Questions70 computer-based multiple-choice, including 65 scored and five pilot/beta items
Time105 minutes, excluding approved accommodations
Passing score245 on a scaled range of 100-350
FeeUS$180 per attempt; no member/nonmember split
DeliveryPearson VUE test centers, English
Question styleMultiple choice; some use exhibits or scenarios
IdentificationTwo signed IDs, one government-issued with photograph, matching your candidate account

A few clarifications are worth making. First, 245 out of 350 is not 70 percent. The range starts at 100, and scaled scores do not map to a raw percentage of correct answers. Sites that convert the score into a "70 percent" threshold are guessing. Second, five of the 70 questions are pilot items that do not count, and you cannot tell which ones they are, so treat every question seriously. Third, the proportion of single-select to multiple-select questions and whether the exam is adaptive have not been verified, so do not rely on forum claims about either. Fourth, calculator provision has not been verified; assume none, and note that the exam is closed-book under the F5 Certified Candidate Agreement, which restricts books, notes and personal electronics.

Local taxes and fees, plus any costs for prerequisite exams and preparation materials, are additional to the US$180 exam fee. For a full cost picture, read the F5-CSE Cloud Certification Cost breakdown, and for scheduling mechanics see F5-CSE Cloud Exam Dates. Our passing score explainer goes deeper on scaled scoring.

Beware conflicting claims: Some third-party sites state 80 questions, 90 minutes, remote Certiverse delivery or a one-specialist prerequisite. None of those match F5's current published pages. Verify logistics on F5's catalog before you book.

The Five Exam Sections

The blueprint organizes exam content into five sections. F5 publishes no percentage weights and does not identify a highest-weighted section, so the number of objectives in a section should not be read as its weight. Examples in the blueprint are illustrative, not exhaustive.

Domain 1: Foundational Cloud Concepts

The vocabulary and architectural models that everything else builds on.

  • Cloud service and deployment models and how they affect application delivery decisions
  • Business drivers and constraints that shape a cloud strategy
  • How virtualization and software-defined networking change traditional network assumptions
  • Where application delivery services sit in cloud architectures

Domain 2: Cloud Infrastructure Design

Applying F5 solutions to cloud platforms with sound sizing, placement and licensing choices.

  • Instance sizing and placement in cloud environments
  • Licensing and support considerations for cloud-hosted F5 deployments
  • SDN constraints and how they affect integration with application delivery services
  • Connectivity and availability design across cloud and on-premises locations

Domain 3: Cloud Migration

Moving existing applications and services without breaking dependencies.

  • Assessing business requirements and constraints before a move
  • Identifying application dependencies that complicate migration order
  • Validating that migrated services behave as intended
  • Hybrid patterns such as cloud bursting to absorb demand peaks

Domain 4: Cloud Deployment

Standing up F5 services in cloud environments.

  • Deploying application delivery instances on cloud platforms
  • Using deployment templates to produce repeatable results
  • Configuration and validation steps once instances are running
  • Troubleshooting deployment problems specific to cloud networking

Domain 5: Cloud Orchestration and Automation

Programmatic control of the application delivery layer.

  • RESTful APIs and how they expose F5 and cloud-platform functionality
  • The northbound, eastbound, southbound and westbound API model
  • Orchestration sequencing, including which resources must exist before others
  • Integrating application delivery services with orchestration tooling

Because the blueprint is the scope, treat modern product names with caution. Unless a product or feature appears in the blueprint, it is supplemental context, not tested scope. The full objective-by-objective breakdown lives in our domains guide.

What Scenario Questions Look Like

Solution Expert exams reward architectural judgment more than command recall. Expect questions that supply a business situation with constraints and ask you to pick the best action. Here is an original illustration of the style, written to show reasoning, not to predict an actual item.

Illustrative scenario (Domains 3 and 5): A company is migrating a three-tier application to a public cloud. The database tier must move last because a reporting system still depends on it. The team wants the application delivery layer provisioned from a template and wants a validation step before any traffic is shifted. Which approach best fits?
  • Plausible but wrong: Shift traffic first, then build the delivery layer, because cloud networking can be corrected later. This ignores the validation requirement.
  • Plausible but wrong: Migrate every tier simultaneously to shorten the project. This ignores the stated dependency.
  • Best fit: Provision the delivery layer from a deployment template, migrate the web and application tiers first, validate behavior against the new environment, then move the database tier last and cut over.

The right answer follows from a dependency-aware, validate-before-cutover mindset that maps directly to the migration and orchestration sections. Good practice material forces you to reject distractors for specific reasons. Be skeptical of question banks whose wrong answers are absurd, such as office furniture or weather. That kind of distractor teaches nothing about architectural trade-offs. Our F5-CSE Cloud practice tests are built around scenario reasoning of this kind, and the difficulty guide explains where candidates tend to struggle.

Validity, Renewal and Retakes

How long the credential lasts

Per F5's January 7, 2026 validity policy, the F5-CSE Cloud credential is valid for two years from the qualifying exam. F5's August 26, 2026 renewal policy supports renewing by retaking and passing exam 402. No dedicated Cloud recertification exam and no CEU or CPE route was verified. Achieving or renewing Cloud can also extend qualifying prerequisite credentials under the same policy, but renewing the administrator credential (F5CABR) does not substitute for renewing Cloud itself.

Retake waiting periods

The 402 blueprint and catalog specify waits of 15, 30 and 45 days after the first three failed attempts, 365 days after the fourth, and 90 days for subsequent attempts. However, the July 2025 candidate agreement gives a different rule after a fourth failure: up to 90 days or a new exam version, whichever is shorter, with prerequisite exams to be retaken and passed. That conflict is unresolved, so confirm the current rule with F5 directly if you ever approach a fourth attempt. Each attempt costs US$180 plus any local fees, which makes preparation quality financially meaningful.

Cloud Versus Security: Two Different Tracks

F5's Solution Expert level includes both a Cloud and a Security track, and candidates often ask which to pursue. They are separate credentials with separate exams; one does not substitute for the other.

Choose based on the work you do or want to do. If your daily problems involve moving workloads, sizing instances, wiring SDN constraints and scripting deployments, Cloud is the better match. If they involve protecting applications, Security fits. Do not assume the Security exam's logistics or prerequisites apply to Cloud.

Careers, Salary and Return on Investment

Honesty matters here. No official F5-CSE Cloud pass rate and no credential-specific salary survey has been published, and salary pages that extrapolate from generic cloud roles do not establish a premium attributable to this certification. Anyone quoting a precise pass rate or salary uplift for F5-CSE Cloud is not citing F5 data. For what the evidence does and does not show, see our pass rate analysis and salary guide.

A more reliable way to judge value is to run your own numbers:

  • Job requirements: Search postings in your market and note whether employers or partners ask for F5 Solution Expert credentials. Our F5-CSE Cloud jobs page covers how to read those listings.
  • Full cost: Count the entire prerequisite chain, not just the US$180 for exam 402, plus preparation materials, taxes and possible retakes.
  • Personal inputs: Factor in your current employer's reimbursement, your target role, and whether the credential unlocks partner-status or project-eligibility requirements at your company.

The credential tends to matter most to professionals already embedded in F5 environments, such as engineers at organizations that run BIG-IP at scale, consultancies and integrators serving F5 customers, and architects handling hybrid or multi-cloud application delivery. Our worth-it analysis walks through a structured ROI approach.

Sequencing Your Preparation

F5 states that it does not create or maintain official study guides, so preparation is self-assembled. The F5-hosted community page for 402 is explicitly labeled unofficial and not created as a full guide, and the F5 DevCentral reading list disclaims official-guide status. Use such resources as supplements, and anchor everything to the blueprint. A sample sequence that respects how the sections build on each other:

Weeks 1-2

Foundations and design

  • Work through Foundational Cloud Concepts to fix vocabulary and models
  • Study Cloud Infrastructure Design: sizing, placement, licensing and SDN constraints
Weeks 3-4

Migration and deployment

  • Practice dependency ordering and validation in migration scenarios
  • Build or review deployment templates and post-deployment checks
Weeks 5-6

Orchestration and review

  • Learn RESTful API patterns and the northbound, eastbound, southbound and westbound model
  • Take timed scenario practice with a 105-minute pacing target

The logic: design and migration decisions depend on the foundational vocabulary, and orchestration questions assume you understand what is being deployed. Adjust the pacing to your own experience.
